How To Enhance Store Bought Soap

By Shannon Laver

We recently got given a pack of orange scented soaps, as they are not natural soaps I decided to enhance the goodness of the soap.  I looked around at my recipes to see what orange scented ones I had, as there were three soap bars I chose three recipes.

You may not have orange but maybe another scent or plain soap, this is how to enhance the goodness of any soap you buy. I will first go over the basic recipe and how to, then move on to my orange goodies.

The basic recipe

150-200gm bar of finely grated soap
10-15ml oil or glycerine
10-15gm exfoliants
10-15gm colour (from clay, powdered herbs or spices)
20-30 drops essential oil
40-80ml distilled water
Dried herbs or flower petals (for decoration)

1. Mix together soap flakes with dry ingredients in a bowl
2. Stir in the oils and give a good mix
3. Add water, working quickly knead the mixture and shape.
4. Leave to dry in a warm, dry spot. Soap balls will dry in two-three days, larger soaps can take over a week.

You can use a muffin tray, bottom of plastic bottles and milk cartons as moulds or just roll into balls and flatten slightly.

If using a muffin tray wipe over with oil and place dried herbs or petals in the bottom before you put the soap mix in, it will enable the soap to slip out when dry. If you use a recycled mould just cut away from soap to remove.

Ideas
  • Remould soap into one bar then slice into hand soaps once dry
  • Great rainy day fun for older children (wear gloves if using essential oil)
  • Make up and give as gifts

Here are the orange recipes I made up. I did not use full strength essential oil as there was already a strong orange aroma.

Recipe 1
Indulge-Orange, Ylang Ylang & Patchouli

200gm bar of finely grated orange soap
15ml cocoa butter oil
6 drops vitamin E oil
10-15gm oatmeal
5 drops patchouli, 8 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
80ml water
Dried herbs or flower petals- rose & lavender

Recipe 2
Refresh-Orange, Rosemary & Cinnamon

200gm bar of finely grated orange soap
10-15ml sunflower oil
6 drops vitamin E oil
10-15gm oatmeal
20 drops rosemary essential oil
80ml cinnamon bark infused water
Dried herbs or flower petals- calendula & rosemary

This one is great for children’s hands, rosemary helps keep away the germs, and the oatmeal gives a good clean.

Recipe 3
Choc Orange-Orange, Cocoa & Vanilla

200gm bar of finely grated orange soap
10-15ml cocoa butter oil
6 drops vitamin E oil
15gm colour- cocoa
10 ml vanilla essence
70ml water
Dried herbs or flower petals- calendula

So with three bars of soap I have made 5 body soaps and 7 hand soaps, not too bad. The bonus is I know they will be good for our skin.

We hope you enjoy enhancing your soap and making your own creations. Please share any recipes you have or make yourself.
